Defragmenter canceled due to "error in file"

I am having an issue trying to defragment my C: drive. The D: drive can be
defragmented with no problems, but when I try to defragment the C: drive it
gets to about 66% and then I get the following message:

The scan has been canceled because an error occurred in file: XXXXX

This is occuring in the "analyzing" stage, and the file XXXXX can be a
number of different files.

I have run chkdsk which informs me there are no errors. I have also
completely cleaned and swept my computer using disc clean-up, ad-aware,
ccleaner and other software to check for any malware or issues.

Basically, the C: drive seems completely clean but whenever I try to defrag
I get this same error message, and I have even moved the "problem" files to
the D: drive temporarily to see if the C: will then defrag, but the error
simply moves to a different file.

Also, the D: drive can be defragmented even when these "problem" files are
on it, rather than on the C:

I have scoured the net for solutions, hence why I ave tried all of the above
but at the end of the day it still comes down to the same issue. I have also
reinstalled the defragmenter.

Any ideas?!! Please help!

Just the standard one that came with Windows.

Well, in that case download JKDefrag. It is free. It is quite different
in the way that it works, but as it works through the Windows
defragmentation API it is just a safe as the built-in program. It has
far more choices and options if you like that sort or thing.

It also does one thing that the Windows defragmenter does not - it
agglomerates the free space.

Hi "markjl_uk",

There are several possible problems. First, are you using the built-in
Windows XP Disk Defragmenter, or some non-Microsoft product? ("Reinstalled
the defragmenter"?) What was the exact text of the error message when the
defrag stopped? Did you run CHKDSK in read only mode with no options, or
with the Fix Files option? Since the error is happening about at the 66%
point, and different files, it may be because you have less than the minimum
15% free space on your C: drive necessary for defrag to work properly. If
you do have enough free space, then you need to have CHKDSK do a full
surface scan repair/recovery on the drive. If CHKDSK still reports no
errors, then you can try booting into Safe Mode and run Disk Defragmenter
from there, since there will be fewer "unmovable" files for defrag to deal
with. It is presently summer, so don't overlook the possibility of drive
over heating. You might check your drive manufacturer's website for
diagnostic tools that may reveal a problem. (Please let us know of any
progress or further questions. :)

To do a full CHKDSK error check:
Start> Run> CHKDSK /R C:

You should get this message:
The type of the file system is NTFS.
Cannot lock current drive.
Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another
process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be
checked the next time the system restarts? (Y/N)

Answer Y, and close all open programs and restart your computer.
CAUTION: Generally, it is not a good idea to start CHKDSK or defrag when
there is a possibility of power outage due to storms, or during the time of
day when people arrive home from work and boost their air conditioners to
maximum with possible power brown outs.

HTH (Hope This Helps :)
