Huge problem with my dvd/cd-rw drive

I have been having so many problems with this drive. Used to work fine but
currently I am having difficulty reading cd roms although dvds are no problem
at all.
Some cd roms may read if I restart the computer with the disc in the drive
but not always. The drive attempts to read but just stops after serveral
attempts. I find this strange cos I have this problem with only cd roms such
as computer games which used to run perfectly, but not dvds.
CAN SOMEONE HELP ME OUT AND SUGGEST SOMETHING CONCRETE TO SORT THIS THING
OUT. THANKS AND GOD BLESS

Check <microsoft.public.windowsxp.hardware> newsgroup. There are dozens of
complaints along this same thread including mine and suggestions and help.
This is an extremely frequent problem and can be caused by the latest SP2
updates among other issues.

Depends.....

SP1, SP2?

Suggestions:

Open My Computer, right click on the CD Rom in question,
Properties/Hardware/Properties/Volumes/Populate.

Other than that, this problem can occur if you are using Folder view in
Windows Explorer. The view may not be automatically refreshed in Folder view
in Windows Explorer.

To work around this problem, use either of the following methods:

Manually refresh Windows Explorer by pressing F5 or by clicking Refresh on
the View menu in Windows Explorer. And/or Do not use Folder view in Windows
Explorer.

Kelly,

You keep giving the same advice but it does not work. I have now tried 3
different drives in my computer and none of them refresh. There must be some
way to set the cd cache to clear out when a disc is removed and get autorun
working right. I have tried everything suggested on this board and in
Microsoft's so called help (which seems outdated). Anyone else have this
persistent problem even after trying everything suggested?

Thanks

This might help someone else out there. The problem was that my NVIDIA
motherboard IDE drivers are not good. NVIDIA v 2.6 IDE Drivers, they can only
be removed for good through add/remove programs Nforce Drivers. They also do
not update to the current version 4.x. Use Microsoft's driver and avoid the
problems if you are using an NVIDIA Chipset.
