CD/DVD player won't read CD-ROMs

I'm running XP Home build 5.1.2006 SP2 on an Acer Aspire desktop, and for
some reason the CD/DVD player has stopped reading CD-ROMs and audio CDs. It
will still play DVDs just fine, but I can't play audio CDs or read or install
any programs from CD-ROM. How do I fix this problem?

Thanks.

cd/DVD drives have two lasers one for each type of disk, it could be that the
laser for the cd has burnt out, try putting the drive in a different machine
to see if it works, if not replace the drive.

Also try this: CD repair for XP.

Or try the following. You should back up the registry before making
changes:

Click Start, Run, type Regedit, click OK.
Locate this Registry Key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class
Key Name: {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
Value Data: [Delete All Value Data from UpperFilters and LowerFilters]
Note: Do not delete the Key or the Multi-String Values. Delete only the
data values.
Exit Registry and Reboot
