I have partitioned a 200GB disc into 4 partitions: C for WinXP; (D being the
DVD); E for data; F for applications; G for games.
I have primarily done this so that I can regularly Ghost the C partition for
backup in case of catestrophic failure. Having smaller partitions also means
that scandisc, defrag virus scans etc are easier and quicker.
As I have 4 accounts on my WinXP Home SP2 setup, I would ideally like the
files for the individual users placed on the E drive, which will be backed
up on a regular basis to a second disc I have.
I had initially thought that I could setup user directories on the E drive
onto which the users could store data they wanted (essentially ignoring the
Documents and Settings folder for things other than individual settings for
the PC). I have since discovered, however, that doing this means that the
other users, which do not have admin rights, cannot do things like copy
files to other folders - even within their 'own' folders etc.
The question, therefore, is whether or not the Documents and Folders section
can be moved to the E drive to allow data to be backed up the way I want it
and still allow better access rights for non admin user privileges.
I have read a Microsoft article on how to do it, involving some hairy
changes to the registry. As a newbie to XP, I am slightly reluctant to go
down that path just yet.
I had heard that you could use the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard to do
this operation in a safer way, but I have yet to discover how to do that
from the C partition to the E partition. It seems to work more for moving
files from another computer.
Am I missing a trick here? Is there an easy way to do what I want.
