File and Settings Transfer Wizard backs up backups!

The only other time I used the File and Settings Transfer Wizard, I
only had one partition.

This time, I'm moving from a home built computer with XP Home retail
to a DELL computer sold with XP Pro whose HDD failed and now has a new
install from the DELL XP Pro reinstallation CD. And I have more than
one source partition. I have 3 partitions, win98, XP, and Data,, and 8
more on an external drive, and watching FSTW run, I see it backing up
files from 4 of them besides the system partition. Including from my
win98 partition and 2 backups of that!! Plus from the data partition.
It all goes into one big file so I can't tell what it has done with
duplicates, but I'm guessing it doesn't know they are duplicates.

I can't disconnect the external drive, because that's where I'm
putting the FSTW file.

How do I make it extract from only my winXP partition (D:)?

I already have simple file by file copies of the w98 and data
partitions, and I figured I would do a final update of them, then copy
them to the new computer. Then later I'd fiddle with win.ini if
necessary, and the MBR and boot sector to get win98 working, AFTER
winXP has its files and settings restored from the FSTW.

Thanks.

No DOS C:> partition so that 98 and XP can be Friends!
No D:> partition so XP can Back up too!
So XP put file in win 98 you see why now!
No E:> to make it EZ for win98
No F:> so that XP get X Out!

C:> 1GB Boot
D:> 8GB Back up
E:> 10 or more But no more then 32 to Install Win 98 Too!
F> 30 GB or More to Install XP on!
G:> There my Compact Disc

When you first started the FSTW on the source computer, you choose your
destination location and transfer method, then you come to the screen
where you select either Settings Only, Files Only, or Both Files and
Settings. You need to put a check in the box at the bottom for "Let me
select a custom list of files and settings when I click next (for
advanced users)".

Then you can select only the settings, files and folders you want
included. It sounds like you did not check that box, and are letting
the FSTW choose for you.

You're right, at first I didn't check the box, but I stopped the first
run, ran it again and checked it, and none of the distinctions it
allowed me to make were based on partition or anything that
correleated with partition.

Checking again, the only entry that is related to partition is under
folders, my QuickLaunch bar, which it correctly says is in Documents
and Settings on the D: drive. I can exclude that one file, but I
can't exclude other partitions. Most of the list is every file
extension the computer knows about.

I guess I don't understand your problem. FAST will save what you ask it
to save, and exclude what you tell it to exclude. The wizard lets you
choose settings, file types, and folders. If your My Documents is on a
different partition, it will go save the files in My Documents on that
partition, IF you ask it to save My Documents. If you don't want them ,
exclude them from the custom list.

You can exclude (remove) ALL the listed folders using the Remove button
after selecting from the list, and then use the Add Folder button,
browse to the folders you want on the partition you want, and add it to
the backup. I am not seeing where the problem is that you are having.
