How to change classification in Software Explorer ?

I'm using
Windows Defender Version: 1.1.1593.0
Engine Version: 1.1.3007.0
Definition Version: 1.23.4050.0
OS: Windows XP SP2 with all essential hotfixes applied

In Software Explorer you can see the classification status for a number of
programs Defender recognizes. There is a button to Disable or Remove them
from this list. There is also an Enable button. However, this button is
greyed out for all programs. Why is this? Is there some way to activate this
button, so I can decide for myself if I would like to activate programs that
I trust?

Thanks for any assistance you can give me.

Hello Marcel,

Try a repair install from Control Panel > Add / Remove Programs > Windows
Defender > Click here for support information > Repair.

Please let us know how you fare after doing a repair install, and if it
resolves the issue, it shouldn't hurt.

Marcel;

If you first disable any of those programs shown in the Software Explorer,
at that point if you select and highlight the disabled program again,
Defender will let you (re)enable it. Give it a try.

You can't change the classification. You have to first "disable" something
before you can "enable" something. That is why it is greyed out.

Thanks, I see what you mean. So what you are saying is that Defender decides
what classification a program gets. The user has no influence on this? If
that is the case , it is not right. A user should have some say in the
matter...

Thanks for your answer. I have tried it, and it works like you say it does.
What I actually meant to ask, should probably have been: I want to change the
classification from "Not yet classified" to "Permitted", because some
programs have been at the first mentioned (not yet classified) for ages.

It would be great to be able to change that, but it has never been
implemented. Having the software signed by the publisher seems to be the
only way it gets permitted.

The user does have some say, but it is indirect. Users who elect to report
choices via Spynet at either the basic or advanced level, influence the
classifications, as I understand it--but this is pretty indirect.

How do you turn off the notification "Windows has blocked some start up
programs"?

Dave M or anyone,

I tried disabling and enabling a program from Seagate that loads at startup,
but cannot get it to change status from "Not Yet Determined". Any other
thoughts/suggestions?

Thanks Dave. I still had the same problem after following your directions.
It turned out to be related to the User Account Control under the Control
Panel. It was turned on which I understood was the correct setting. It
blocks any changes to the system without the "Proceed/Cancel" popup
appearing. I am not sure why it sees the program as attempting to "change"
the system. Perhaps with the control turned off I should try reinstalling
the external drive software.
