Windows Defender: How to permit action without being prompted at every re-boot

I've been asked to start a new thread for my problem so here goes:

I'm running Windows Defender, details:
Windows Defender Version: 1.1.1593.0

Engine Version: 1.1.3301.0

Definition Version: 1.29.7345.0

Product ID: 81664-844-7864343-04403

I'm running on Win XP SP2.

On boot-up, WinDef ALWAYS alerts me to a start-up task and asks to permit
or not.
Each time WinDef asks to permit or block and there's no option to add to
allowed items.
Also, in "Allowed items" there is no option to add.

I always select permit and it always succeeds. How do I make this permanent?

I've had to resort to disabling two notification selection boxes in WinDef
Tools Options.
This is not acceptable.

So, what's the real scoop?

Do I have to join MicroSoft SpyNet ?

Craig

P.S.
Details from WinDef history:

Description:
This program has potentially unwanted behaviour.

Advice:

Permit this detected item only if you trust the program or the software
publisher.

I used to get the same responce on start up about my ISP program. I had to
add it to the ignore list in do not scan these files or locations box in
Tools, Options, scroll down and click add, and add the exact path to the file
in question to the box. As long as you trust the file/program and know it is
something that you want to run, doing this will not cause any problems.

Thank you, Kevin, for finally explaining this clearly.
In hindsight, I realize that my problems were the ASSUMPTIONs that I SHOULD:
- be able to right click or elsewise drag-drop or copy-paste the entries
- NOT have to manually add the entries

WinDef sure has a clunky user interface, as many others have stated.
I really it is going to be revamped so further comment is unnecessary nor
productive.

Many thanks to everyone else who assisted along the way.
