errors I make in configuration show up on the other machine as popups.
the new machine will dial the modem on the old machine but I still have
both saying the workgroup is unavailable on both machines.

no user password

User accounts and networking in xp require passwords on the accounts. Their
must be the same user/password combination on both computers.(blank or no
password doesn't work).

OK in two days of trying to network these machines I have never been
prompted for a password.
One machine is brand new. I have not used it yet other than try to network
it.
Where do I enter passwords.

Start, control panel, user accounts, choose an account, choose option to set
a password.

Are you saying I have to open an account on my new machine using exactly
the same name as the account I use on the old system?

I'll have to pay someone to come out and swap out my harddrives because I
can't get these computers networked.

Oh well.

Before you do, consider a USB HDD box.
