How do you copy files in Windows 7?

S

Steve Hayes

I wanted to copy some photos to an external disk.

I marked them to copy -- difficult, because it only seems to have icon view,
and not list view, so one has to go Ctrl-C and click on every one.

But when I had marked about 5, it began tyo copy them to somewhere else on the
SAME disk.

I try again, and it starts makinigt aother copy of the files on the SAME disk.

As a result there is a HUGE waste of time, having to delete these folders
individually, and instead of making backups I've probably deleted some of the
originals as well.

Something that takes 30 seconds in XP is going to take me 30 hours in Windows
7.

Why to Microsoft have to make every new version more difficult to use than the
last?

I suspect you moved the mouse slightly while you were doing one of
those Ctrl-clicks. It's easy to do.

But I'm surprised you couldn't change to list view and get the check
boxes, which would have made the whole thing easier.

Linux is an ever more attractive option :)

A few Windows features to consider.. these have been available since
Windows 95, and most since Windows 3.0 or earlier:

- Ctrl/Z would undo the "copy" operation if the same window is open.

- Ctrl/A would select all.

- A right-click, (or pressing the Context Menu button on the lower-right
of the keyboard, between Ctrl and the Windows Menu key) would bring up a
menu that allows you to copy (all the highlighted files). Ctrl/V or a
right-click, Paste would paste them wherever you've highlighted.

- A search for "copy of" should show all copies of files. Ctrl/A would
select all, and the Delete key would send them all to the Recycle Bin.

Thank you. But is there any setting that can stop it from automatically making
copies in the first place?
"difficult, because it only seems to have icon view," What is "it"? Is
it a graphics program, Explorer, or another piece of software? If
Explorer, there's a button on the Toolbar that looks like an icon view.
Clicking it should toggle you through the different views available.
Clicking the button just right of that button should let you select from
a list of views. If you're referring to a program other than Explorer,
it might not have these views options.

Found them now, thanks.

But I'd love to know where to turn off that automatic copying feature.

True.

For those who can't come to grips with Windows, instead of drinking beer
and watching television, it would be worthwhile trying Linux.

I've been tying for 11 years to get it to install.

If you would like help installing Linux, then yell out for help.

I've had no problems dual booting Ubuntu and Windows except that Ubuntu
won't allow my Windows programs to run.

Wrong newsgroup.

I installed Fedroa 12.

It would only display at 800x600 screen resolution
Ran Ubunto from CD - same problem
Got possible fix for Ubuntu and tried to install it over Fedora.
It wants to install itself in a partition where I don't want it to be.

If you think you can help, please e-mail me at
(e-mail address removed)

but it's off topic here.

Those, of course, are not newsgroups. There *is* a Win 7 newsgroup,
alt.windows7.general. There may be others.

Thanks for that.

Unfortunately my news server doesn't seem to carry it.

I don't see an NNTP-Posting-Host header on your article, but other
headers suggest you're posting from eternal-september. Have you
asked them to carry the group?

Of course, you *could* break down and pay $10 a year or so for
news.individual.net. They have been quite responsive to my requests
to carry new text groups.

Now that I know that there is such a group, I suppose I could ask them.

I've also discovered comp.os.ms-windows.misc

which seems to cover it.

On Eternal September there is alt.windows7.general.
