XP came installed with my new computer. I never saw any promp to activate. How do I check to see that I am indeed activated? I can't find Activate in Start menu. Husband disabled some services. Please help me before I am arrested for attempted murder

If you have not seen a prompt to activate, then it is already done. Most major manufacturers ship new computers that way. If it has not been done, you WILL see a message

Pre-installed OEM operating systems are typically either
pre-activated at the factory or are BIOS-locked and do not required
activation as long as they're installed on the computer with which
they're sold.

The OS will let you know, with frequent reminders, if you do need
to activate. To check for yourself, Start > All Programs >
Accessories > System Tools > Activate Windows. Alternatively, Start >
Run > "C:\Windows\system32\oobe\msoobe.exe /A." It will probably tell
you that WinXP has already been activated.

microsoft blows

MMMMMmmm, not meaning to hijack, but my msoobe.exe has somehow been disabled
and will not run. Windows update says I "may" have pirated software and
refuses me the service pack.Anyway of installing the xpsp1a while bypassing
microsofts "scanning" of files?

Run:

%SYSTEMROOT%\system32\oobe\msoobe.exe /A

If the product is already activated, it will say so.

No, there's no way I know of to by-pass the check for a legitimate
license, short of downloading some sort of key generator from a warez
site and turning your "possibly pirated" license into a "definitely
pirated" license, by trying various and assorted randomly generated
keys.

Are you trying to install Service Pack 1a and getting the
following:

The Product Key Used to Install Windows Is Invalid
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q326904

You need to purchase and use a _legitimate_ full retail copy of
WinXP Pro to perform a repair (a.k.a. in-place upgrade) installation,
using the new CD and Product Key.

How to Perform an In-Place Upgrade of Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/directory/article.asp?ID=KB;EN-US;Q315341

Remember, you should also report whomever sold you the pirated
software to the pertinent law enforcement agencies; you've been
defrauded.
