how do I get rid of dots when I use the space bar?

For some reason when I hit the space bar, a dot appears where the space is
supposed to appear. Also when I hit the enter key, a funny character appears
at the beginning of the new line

Sounds like you're using Word.
Open Word, then Tools | Options | and turn-off (un-check) Spaces and
Paragraph Marks.

Thanks Rob.
I checked this in WORD and they were already un checked. Any other
suggestions?

I looked under tools, options in outlook (when an e mail was open) and the
formatting marks all box was checked. Un chked the box and the rest is
history. Thanks for your help!!!
