Why do pink dots appear every time I insert a space between words?

In Outlook 2003 every time a enter a space between words a pink dot appears
in the space. How do I make the dots go away?
Here is an example:
Why..are..you..here? (pretend black dots are pink)

While composing a message, go to Tools/Options/View - under Formatting
Marks; is there a checkmark by Spaces?
