Red dots between words (O/L 2003)

Someone here using O/L 2003 has suddenly started to get two minute red
dots between each word when he creates a new mail message.

This is not like "show/hide" as paragraph marks, tabs etc are not being
revealed, yet every time he hits the space bar there appears two tiny
little red dots for each space!

Any clues, anyone please? I'm baffled....

Did you turn off the spaces or all marks in Word's tools, options, menu,
view to verify it wasn't spaces?
