How can Outlook constantly look for and notify me of new mail?

I am running Outlook 2003. I am connect to Comcast's POP3 email server,
running with a broadband connection. The only way I know I have messages is
to go to my personal folder, click SEND/RECEIVE, and then Outlook will
populate my inbox. I have checked the Tools, Options, Email, Advanced Email
and turned on all the notifiers of new mail. Still, it does not work. I
used to use Outlook 2000 and it would notify me automatically and populate my
inbox with the new mail, once I entered Outlook 2000. Please advise what I
should do next, if anyone knows. Thanks.

Tools->Options->Mail Setup->Send/Receive settings. Ensure you have an
automatic polling interval set and that you have send immediately when
connected checked as well..

Post all replies to the group to keep the discussion intact. Due to
the (insert latest virus name here) virus, all mail sent to my personal
account will be deleted without reading.

After furious head scratching, Christie asked:
