hotfixes

When I view "add or remove programs" in control panel, a
large number of hotfixes with specific references appear,
e.g.Windows XP Hotfix [SP2] Q322011.

Is it safe to remove old ones of these that appear not to
have been accessed for many months?

NO! These are updates for your operating system that have been installed
through Windows Update.

You can safely get rid of any for the hotfixes you definitely want to keep.
First, delete the hotfix files starting with "$NtUninstall..." from your Windows
folder. After that has been done, go to Add or Remove Programs and click on
"Remove" for each hotfix. You will be able to remove each from the list one at
a time.

I'd suggest you keep any hotfix file you're unsure of. I'm still not completely
comfortable with Q811493, so I'm keeping the undo file for that for another
couple of weeks. Also, it's a good idea to keep any new ones for a few weeks or
until you are sure they're OK.

Those are there to allow removal of the fixes - see the corresponding
description at
http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;322011
for that example.

Each has a hidden folder in C:\Windows - eg $NTUninstallQ322011$
If you do not want to be able to uninstall a fix, delete that folder.
Then if you go to the entry in Add/remove and try Remove, it will fail
and give you the choice of removing the entry
