BELARC Advisor vs MS HotFixes

M

Mike Fox

Belarc [a neat little free program that tells you everything about
your computer] says that several of Win XP's HotFix updates need to be
reinstalled.

Issue 1: Can I simply reinstall the HotFix over the old one, or do I
have to uninstall the old one.

Issue 2: Several of the HotFixes that need to be reinstalled don't
even appear in the Add/Remove programs utility.

Thanks for any help.

What does the Windows Update site say? I'd be more inclined to trust that
than the Belarc Adviser...

It says I have all the updates, and the Update History says the
updates were successfully installed. However, Belarc says that after
something screwed up the update after it was installed. Who to
believe.

Here's a utility that's run from a command prompt. It will show the service pack level and which hotfixes are installed in a system:

Qfecheck.exe Verifies the Installation of Windows 2000 and Windows XP Hotfixes
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;282784

From the article: "This tool ensures that not only have the fixes been installed, but that they are current on the computer." More about this in the Summary section.

Mike,

I'd too be inclined to trust Microsoft in this. But I'd get in touch
with Belarc asap and let them know of the problem - they may know of a
fix needed. Or they may need to fix their product.

Cheers,

Chuck

Well I (I hesitate to use the word but "religiously") keep my system up to
date with Windows updates and I also have Belarc Adviser installed. I just
did a BA run and evrything is hunky-dory.

Do you have anti-virus software or something like that installed? That can
fscksed things up.

Yep, I have the latest Norton's AV. There are dozens of HOTFIXES that
are properly installed according to Belarc and about 10 that aren't.

The origianl question is still open:
Can I simply reinstall the HotFix over the old one, or do I
have to uninstall the old one first?

Re-install over the old one, no need to uninstall first.

Checked with Belarc and they say the HOTFIX needs to be reinstalled.

Mike,

There are a couple hot fixes mentioned in these discussion groups
which are mentioned specifically as having this problem. What is the
number of your problematic hot fix?

Cheers,

Chuck
