home networking WinXP-Win98 over a WAP

My main workstation is WinXP Pro. I have a wireless network consisting of a
Westell NAT DSL modem, a Netgear 10mb hub, a Linksys 802.11b WAP, and a
Win98SE workstation with a Linksys USB wireless network adapter. The XP Pro
is connected to the hub, as is the Linksys WAP. The WinXP and the Win98
workstations have the same workgroup names. BlackIce is installed on the
WinXP because it's required by my employer for VPN purposes.

My problem is that I've shared resources (printer, file directories) from
the XP, but I can't get to them from the Win98. The WinXP node shows up on
the Win98 network neighborhood, but I can't get to it. Double-clicking the
icon fails. Right-clicking and selecting properties tells me \\winxp is not
accepting remote connections. I can connect from \\winxp to \\win98.

What's wrong here? I used the 'set up a home network' wizard on xp and
installed the files from the resulting disk on the '98 machine. I've
assigned the ip range assigned by the Westell DSL to be allowed by BlackIce.
Doing that didn't make a difference. What else do I do?

Thanks in advance.

I am having the same problem, except that I am using a
SMC7004VWBR router. I can see the Win98 host from the XP
box but I can't access any files. I can't see anything on
the network from the Win98 box.

In my case, the router is outside the connection between XP and 98. The link
between the XP and the 98 is a 10mb hub and a WAP talking to a USB network
adapter on the '98 machine. As the '98 machine can see the XP machine (just
not access it) and can browse the web, the WAP is not the problem, I don't
think.

There's another thread here, "Trouble with Peer to Peer - XP Home - Win2000
Pro Network File/Print Sharing" that's essentially the same topic. A
response to that was to make sure both PCs are in the same workgroup and all
users exist on both computers. That is true in my case, but they're defined
as 'local', if it matters.

Another response asked about the 'node type' displayed in cmd>ipconfig /all.
I replied that mine is listed as 'hybrid' and am awaiting a response. Follow
the other thread as well as this one and we may get our problem solved.
