Hitting the b key causes blank screen and delay

Can anyone shed any light please.
In word when the b key is hit the screen goes blank, there is a delay and
the screen comes back. From then on throughout the document every second b
key that is pressed gets the same result. This doesn't happen in wordpad so
keyboard is not at fault . Anti virus scan comes up with nothing.
If I was typing "the blue ballon was big" the screen would blank on blue
and big

You've posted in a newsgroup devoted to the MS Access database product, not
MS Word. However, my guess would be that there is a macro installed, with
'b' as its shortcut key. As the behaviour is alternating it sounds like the
macro might be toggling some state on and off. Select Tools | Macro | Macros
on the standard Word menu bar to see installed macros.

Does this happen in any other program besides Word - eg Notepad.
If yes, check if someone has created a Windows shortcut key or if the
keyboard has some kind of custom function feature which has been switched
on.
If it only happens in Word
Close Word. Find Normal.dot and rename it OldNormal
Re-open Word (a new copy of Normal.dot will be created automatically), see
if this solves it. If it does, open OldNormal and copy across the features
on it which you want to keep.
If you were using another template other than Normal, do the same with that.
