Here's An Odd One

You just saved my life, Frank. I have been living with a ghost message in my
outbox for three weeks, and thank to your instructions, I have been able to
delete it through WMUtil. Thanks!

Same with me. New computer, new vista, 1 month later a problem with no
solution.
Not happy!! Wonder when we will all get one???!!!

I figured it out!!!

1. Close Outlook.

2. Go to C:\users\youruserprofile\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Mail\
You can get the exact path using the following steps:
a. Tools > Options > Advanced > Maintenence
b. Click the "Store Folder" button
c. The exact path shows in an information popup.

3. Go to that folder and rename the file WindowsMail.MSMessageStore (don't
delete, just in case it doesn't work. I just put a "1" in the name.)

4. Restart Outlook (it will say "Rebuilding the database")

5. The problem file will still be there. Delete the file

I have the exact same problem and this keeps any mail going from my ISP, not
only from this address. HP (installed Vista) is no help.

Has anyone provided an answer?

I'm having exactly the same problem. I'm using Vista and Windows mail. My bet
is that it has something to do with Vista. Can someone in Microsoft (the
company we love to hate!) help?

If you have messages stuck in the Outbox, do the following:
First, delete or move as many of those messages as you can.
There will be one undeletable message.
Download and run the WMUtil program:
http://www.oehelp.com/WMUtil
Use WMUtil's Clear Outbox tool.
Be sure to read and follow the instructions on that download page.

Under the Local Folders pane, my Outbox folder appears to be empty as there
is nothing showing waiting to be sent. My email service was down for a
couple of minutes this morning and I had an email waiting to be sent. I
opened the Outbox folder and found a reply to a newsgroup post that I
thought had been sent. It's a 1KB plain text reply. When I tried to open
it to see what it was about an error message popped up stating "the message
could not be displayed, and the following reason:
"Windows Mail encountered an unexpected problem while displaying this
message. Check your computer for low memory or low disk space and try
again."

Next I tried to delete the message and got a popup stating "An unknown error
has occurred". Another popup appears with a colored bar across it and the
words "Deleting messages" on it. There is a light shadow moving across the
bar which I guess is supposed to indicate some sort of action is happening.
Nothing happens though and I eventually just close the popup.

Next I tried to drag and drop it into the Deleted folder and again got a
popup stating "An unknown error has occurred" followed by another popup
stating "The selected message(s) could not be moved. An unknown error has
occurred"

What's up with the message? I can't open it, move it, send it or delete it.

I tried the download, but it gives me an error message.

"Unable to access database"

Any suggestions?

Does the WMUtil screen come up and look like the one on
the download page?

Were any of the buttons in WMUtil grayed out?
If so, did you go into Task Manager and verify that no
processes named WinMail.exe were running? You may have
to click on "Show processes from all users."

As we all are dealing with this ghost email issue, I was wondering if anyone
knew of a different email service that one could switch to without changeing
the email address?

I am having the same problems as you and cannot seem to fix it as well. This
message is staying stuck in my inbox and I am not able to read it or delete
or move it. This message will not go away.

I am having the exact same problem and can't send email. I can receive it
but cannot reply. It's very frusterating! Please post if you find a way to
fix this problem. I had this same problem back a few months ago and spend
HOURS on the phone with Microsoft trying to resolve it. Finally it got fixed
but I do not have the time to spend, nor the patience, to go thru that again.
Thanks,
Ashley

If you want help, you will need to describe the details of the problem,
and include a copy of the error message.

i am having the same problem. In my deleted folder I can't delete some of
the messages. The newly deleted ones from the inbox can get deleted, but
the older ones come up with an 'unknown error has occurred" I can move them
and delete them, either.

Any answers to this/

Download and install this fix, with Windows Mail not running:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/941090

Although it's labelled as for mail stuck in the Outbox, it also works in
other folders. If you don't know whether to use the 32-bit version or
the 64-bit version, try the 32-bit version first. Certain common
antivirus programs, such as most of those from Norton or McAfee,
or a recent one from Trend, tend to cause such problems, although
seldom immediately, so if you have such a program, remember
where to find the fix - you are likely to need it again.
