Windows Mail in Vista was working fine. Then today there is one message in
the Outbox that cannot be sent. When I click on the message in the Outbox it
says "Message could not be displayed" in the text window. When I try to
delete the message a small window says "An unknown error has occurred." When
I try to move the message to another folder a small window says "The message
cannot be moved. An error has occurred." Additional messages I try to send
are backed up behind this one, but they can me deleted or moved. What can I
do?

Hi,

I have downloaded the software, and followed the instructions, once i
clicked on clear outbox, a message comes up, saying: Unable to access
database. System.Access.Violation.Exception.... etc... any idea what this is.

Thanks.

This worked for me. I've had a "message" stuck in my inbox for a couple of
months that caused me no problems so I left it. However, a message that I
just found stuck in my outbox blocked all outgoing messages. The program
seems to have cleared both problems.

Thank you Peter. That solved the problem. Actually the WMUtil program is
great. It not only solved this problem, but cleaned up my message files and
really improved the performance of Windows Mail. I recommend it to others
who are having similar problems.

Thank you again, Peter.

Download and install this hotfix, with Windows Mail not running:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/941090

Although it's labelled as for messages stuck in the Outbox, in also works in
other folders. If you don't know whether you have a 32-bit version of Vista
of a 64-bit version, try the hotfix for the 32-bit version first. Certain
common
antivirus programs, such as most of those from Norton or McAfee, tend to
cause stuck messages and other problems in Windows Mail, although seldom
immediately, so if you have such a program, remember where to find the
hotfix
and hope it will install again if you need it again. A recent version of
the Trend
antivirus program also causes assorted problems in Windows Mail.

The Vista SP1 update includes this hotfix and more, but takes longer to
install.

The hotfix or update may or may not delete the problem message; if it
doesn't,
it should at least make it possible for you to delete it.
