Hello,
When clicking help and support from the start menu, nothing happen, when
clicking the help menue from the windows explorer, an error message:
"helpctr.exe can not be found......try search to locate the file".

My observations are:

1. When searching the file, the results was: "not found" but actualy the
file helpctr.exe (751 Kb) was there in the W\pchealth\....\binaries folder
2. when double click it, nothing happen.
3. In the App paths of the registry, the key Helpctr.exe was not there.

I don not have the backup Windows XP CD as my computer is OEM.

Your help is very much appreciated.

Hi Mali,

Fix Windows XP Help - from Doug's site:
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/utils/fix_windows_xp_help.htm

In that does not help, try reinstalling Help and Support Center using this
method:

Click Start, Run and type "%systemroot%\inf". Right-click the file
PCHealth.inf file and choose "Install". Insert your XP CD when prompted. If
you have a Service Pack installed, be sure to point to the
%Windir%\i386\ServicePackFiles folder, or your slipstreamed XP CD (if
available).

Here is the comprehensive rebuild method for Help and Support.

that tip.

Thanks Ramesh,
I've tried the first one without sucess. I can not apply the second one as i
do not have the XP CD.
My question which may give you a clue is: why the Windows search engine
won't recognize the file "helpctr.exe" although it does exists in the
binaries folder?

Mali,

It's because of the fact that Windows does not look into that folder, when
you launch a program (without mentioning the path) from Start, Run dialog.
That's why the "App Paths" value need to be fixed. BTW, fixing "App Paths"
value does not necessarily fix the other problem you';re experiencing.

Hello Ramesh,
I compared the size of the "pchealth" folder on my computer with a friend's
Win XP Home computer. I found that my pchealth folder's size is only about 13
MB while my friend's computer pchealth folder size is about 35 MB. So this is
a strong evidence that i indeed have lost a lot of the help centre data. My
question is:
can i simply copy and paste (through flash memory stick) the whole pchealth
folder from the other computer to my computer?.
please advise.

Mali,

PCHealth folder amounts to 33 MB in my system.
folder from the other computer to my computer?

Yes, you can give that a try.

FYI, rebuilding the Help Center restores all the missing files.
