I bought a new (used) PC with XP Home SP1 and as the subject notes, H & S
would not work. I would get an hourglass for a brief instance and then
nothing.
There are numerous threads on this subject in this group and others. I've
reviewed their suggestions and tried to resolve it through that avenue.
First I went to kelley korner and implemented the first fixed listed
(helpand supportmissing.reg). When I click on the H & S icon in start menu I
now get 'Windows cannot find "helpctr.exe"...'.
I then tried restoring winhlp32.exe. Windows is still unable to locate
"helpctr.exe".
I, on the other hand, can find at least 3 helpctr.exe files through search:
HELPCTR.EXE-0BD53B.pf C:\WINDOWS\Prefetch
HELPCTR.EXE-375F413C.pf C:\WINDOWS\Prefetch
helpctr.exe C:\Windows\LastGood\system32\dllcache
helpctr.exe C:\Windows\PCHealth\HelpCtr\Binaries
helpctr.exe C:\Windows\LastGood\pchealth\helpctr\binaries
The thing is I don't know what to do with these files, nor how to do a
system restore because I would have through the H & S menu.
