Help with non-working Com port

P

Pete

I have a Dell PC with XP. It has one com port.
I have done something which has caused the COM port to not function any
more.
My guess is that it occurred after I installed a USB Bluetooth adapter. This
uses (I think the
correct term is) virtual com ports. It is using COM8 and COM9.

I now want to use the real COM device - COM1, which I currently don't seem
to be to get to
connect to my PDA (which previously worked fine).
I have tried disabling both the Bluetooth entries under COM/LPT section of
the device manager
and rebooted.
Didn't make any difference. I'll try removing the Bluettorh software/driver
completely.
Any ideas how to get this working without having to install/remove software
if indeed that
works at all?

Thanks

Pete

Try going into the BIOS and making sure the COM port hasn't been disabled.
If it has been disabled, re-enable and restart. If is is enabled, then
dis-able and restart. Then, go back into the BIOS and re-enable. With
luck, XP will go "Look what I just found!"

Well windows should allow you to access the COM1 regardless of what the blue tooth is using ( provide blue tooth is not on COM1 ) Does your PDA have auto setup features? If it does try to manually install the pda thru the add new hardwrae wizard. Then specify that you want the COM1 or COM2 ( your choice here ) to be used for your PDA. It may give you a message saying that the devbice already exsits on that port. Then goto device man and instance of the PDA that may be listed there. Then go ahead and replace the exsiting device on COM1 or COM2 ( you choose port )

Hope this help

Try deleting the COM1 entry in the Ports section of the device manager
and rebooting your PC. Windows will automatically find COM1 and reset
the driver for it. This will usually clear up any problems with a COM
port.

Make sure the baud rate, parity, etc is still set correctly to
talk to the PDA. Try opening the port with hyperterminal and see
if that works or you get some type of error.
