How to discover which program is utilising a COM port

Hi All

I am having a problem getting a usb to serial converter working on my
pc. Essentially, the arrangement creates a virtual com port (which
installs as COM5 on my pc). Whilst "Device Manager" says that the
virtual com port is installed correctly, applications which try to use
the device on COM5 cannot get access. For example, Hyperterminal says
that the com port is in use by another program.

I have tried killing all appiclations and process which I know are
non-essential but cannot seem to free up the com port. Is there some
way of knowing what applications/processes are accessing the various
com ports?

Many thanks
Chris
