Help: suddenly unable to print - system error

I'm running under XP Home Edition, SP3; my printer is an HP 1210 all-in-one
(scanner, fax, printer). Scanning operation works fine, but when I attempt
to print the document is spooled, but then deleted w/ error message as
follows: System Error - Document cannot be printed due to a system error ...
try again ... restart ..."
I've done that many times, ran diagnostics, uninstalled & reinstalled the
printer. No change.
Can anyone help? Thanks!
