Unable to print using Microsoft Fax

I have an HP Desktop Pavilion xg992 with XP Home updated to SP2.
I'm having a problem printing with Microsoft Fax. I've been able to use fax
to print documents, but it just quit working. I click on print and choose
the fax printer, the fax wizard opens and I'm able to preview the document.
However, after clicking Finish, nothing happens. The Fax Monitor doesn't
open and the fax doesn't show up in the console Outbox. In control panel,
under Printers and Fax, the fax printer shows document pending.
The modem works fine. I can dial any number (including the fax machine).
There is no local printer other than the fax printer. There used to be a
network printer, but it has been deleted.
I have removed fax in Windows components and added it, configured it,
uninstalled modem and com ports and reinstalled them. Nothing seems to make
any difference. Sometimes there is an error in event viewer about the fax
printer monitor failed to connect to the fax service.

I tried HP Chat Support but they didn't understand what I was asking.

Can anyone help?

Examine the status of the Fax Service and of the Fax printer and tell us
what you see. Define what you changed just before "it just quit working."
Such things never happen for no reason.

The status of the Fax Printer is online. I'm not sure how to find the
status of the Fax Service. Right now I'm home and don't have access to the
HP (which is at work).
As for changes....I was last able to fax successfully on Aug. 16. When I
tried on Aug. 31, I wasn't able to. I have no idea what changes I might
have made during those two weeks. The only major change would possibly
uninstalling the network printer.
Sorry I can't be more help than that. I've been trying to fix this whenever
I have a spare moment at work (not too often).
Thanks

The status of the Fax Service can be examined in Administrative Tools. You
haven't clarified whether your Fax Service was using a local fax modem or a
shared network fax modem.

Fax Service is set to manual. I don't receive faxes, only send.
Using a local fax modem.

That doesn't matter. The status of the Fax Service should still display as
"Started"

I can't remember whether it does or not; I'll check tomorrow. I thought it
only showed started it I sent a fax. Event viewer shows service starts
successfully if I try to send a fax.

The fax service is not started. If I start it, it stops. I get a message
that some services stop automatically unless they're in use.
