System Error

B

bery n eddie

Hi,

I have a HP psc 1205 USB All-in-1 printer/copier/scanner. When I try and
print, the job appears in the printer job queue but then a pop-up box
appears with the title "System Error" and the message "The document cannot
be printed due to a system error. Try printing again. If unsuccessful,
restart Windows and try printing again.". After a while the pop-up box
disappears and the job disappears from the queue. The printer head moves
briefly after the box disappears, but no print is produced.

I have tried deleting the printer and uninstalling the software, and
reinstalling, but it does not fix the problem. This is a new problem as the
printer has worked fine for months. However, I'm not sure what has changed
on the system to cause this. The system specs are:

Windows XP Professional version 2002 & SP2

1GB memory

AMD Athlon 64 FX-55

400Gb disk drive (300Gb free)

Latest drivers for psc 1205 downloaded from HP

Using the HP Printer Toolbox, I ran the test to 'Clean the Print Cartridges'
and this produced a printed test page. If I run the 'Print a Test Page' job
this produces the 'System Error' message.

Any ideas on what I can do next to fix the problem?

Thanks for your help,

E

Hello - could someone please respond to this? There is no information on the
System Error message in microsoft.com or HP.

Has no-one else ever had this error?

Hi Alan,

Thank you for your reply. There are no HPUSB*files on the system. But
before we draw conclusions from that, I did a search on a different system
with a HP psc 1210 printer (slightly newer model) and there are no HPUSB*.sys
files on this system either, and this one works!

I searched from the c: directory downwards, including sub-folders and hidden
folders and files, using accounts with Computer Administrator privileges.

Is there anything else I can check?

Andy W

Hi,

In case anyone else was having this issue, it was caused by the Data
Execution Prevention mechanism (DEP). The resolution was to add the printer
driver to the list of exceptions.

Cheers,

Hi,

Select 'Start' ant then 'Control Panel'. Open the System icon and click on
the 'Advanced' tab. Then select 'Performance' (why did they pick the
Performance Tab?) and the 'Data Execution Prevention' tab.

This can have two settings with the first one for essential windows programs
and services. If you are running with this option then you should be OK and
will not have to add the driver file.

However if you have selected the second option and are having problems
printing (System Error) then you will need to press the Add button and add in
the driver file.

This is unbelievable ... just started having this "system error" problem
today. I have xp, hp deskjet 6540 and was working in printshop. I am able
to print out of all other programs including printshop, just not the one
document I actually want.

Any ideas or help out there?? Happy Holidays to all.

I went to the HP website and upgraded my printer drivers. Not just remove and
reinstall the old driver. Now I have no more system error problem, so far.
