Thank you very much for the advice.

It seems you are right unfortunately, I have taken one of them out and tested again and its at 80% so far with no errors... I guess one is faulty. Perhaps it was caused by electrostatic when i was installing the new heatsink, wow i thought it was just a myth, looks like i better start using those wrist bands :p

Dont suppose it was caused by the heatsink facing the wrong way and blowing hot air directly at the memory sticks was it?

Hi,

When fitting pc parts its a good idea to earth yourself to do this touch a kitchen tape then this discharges the static electric. The hot air from the cpu fan would not cause this problem. It looks like some of the chips on the other stick have gone bad you can either send it back to corsair or the place where you got it from.

Hope this helps.

Ok so I removed the faulty memory stick and everything seems fine. However I have a heating problem with my new card. My old card was a Radeon X1950 and I used GPU-Z to measure the idle temps and it averaged at around 55%

I purchased a video card cooler ( http://www.amazon.co.uk/StarTech-co...6?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1240938972&sr=8-6 ) which lowered my old graphics card average to 52% so thought it may help my new card a bit.

So I installed my new graphics card which is a ATI Radeon XFX 4870 1GB with the video card cooler, installed all the latest drivers but the idle GPU temperate averages at 78%!

What is up with that!? Can anyone offer help or advice?

Ok you could try this program below and it should allow you to manually set the fan speed of the gfx card set it to 80% and see what happens. I think it should work ok with ati cards.

Whats the fan speed at? From what i've seen they do run quite warm.

Whats your case cooling like?

The fan speed is at 21% but its the default fan speed when I installed the graphics card, why would they set it so low?

My case cooling is okay, idle temps average at 45-48%

wizkid, what program can i use to alter fan speed? i take it gpu-z cant do that?

Hi,

Sorry I have just read my last post and forgot to include the link. You can try this program.

With regards GPUZ that does not allow you to change the fan settings.

Most cards are now set at the default fan speed of 21% I think the newer drivers also set the cards at setting to.

Np. Why are they set so low? Is it normal that my graphics card is idling at such a high temperature at the current fan speed? I dont know why its so hot, the cooling in my case seems okay and i have a vga cooler underneath it.

Ill try that program out thanks

Your card does seem to be running pretty hot, my GTX260 idles at 40-45 C with the fan set at 80% although the card that you have do seem to run hotter. I suggest you try and set the fan speed to 100% at first and see how the temp decreases.

Its not uncommon though for cards now days to overheat and setting the fan speed higher normally corrects this.

I've set the fan speed to 45% and the card is now idling at 45 C

So that seems pretty good, although even at only 45% fan speed its a a lot louder... i dunno how you cope with your fan at 80% must be so loud. Having a noisy computer irritates me.

I just dropped the fan speed to 30% and the card is idling now at only 48 C .... whats wrong now, seems to good to be true.

I dont see how at 22% fan speed the card idled at 78 C and at 30% fan speed it idles at 48 C

crazy.

Thats probably because you had it set at 45% and its had time for the temp to drop down. I would keep an eye on the temps of the card, and I would also set it up so that when you login into windows that it sets the fan speed for you.

Your fan speed is low at idle, it should kick in when it starts using more power, gaming for instance. :)

if the noise bothers you just bump up the fan while gaming.

Viceroy: your said "My case cooling is okay, idle temps average at 45-48%" (you mean C i take it?) What temp is that? CPU? thats still kinda hot tbh, dont sound like your case is all that good, what is it or what fans you got?

Yeah i meant C not %.

Temp of the CPU yes. Now that I have removed the faulty memory stick the temps idle at 40 C But I dont know if it was just the 2GB extra memory that was making the case idle at 45-48 or the memory fault.

you can see a picture of my computer insides on the first page. I have a large back fan and an arctic cooling 64 procesor fan. I would still like to decrease idle temps in my cpu.

I have a Trigon case https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/images/computers/black_trigon_190x280.jpg

_

Also does anyone know if there is a place that buys faulty graphics cards? I have a Sapphire HD 3870 that caused green lines on the screen so I summuzied that the card was faulty.

Neither tbh, the ram would make it a little hotter, doubt you'd actually notice it or not.

Can you rotate the CPU fan 90degree's so its blowing at the rear fan, that will help quite a bit as you wont be pulling the hot air off the GFX card and it will be going straight out the back of the case. :) Have a look here (old pics now but you get the idea) to give you an idea, Also try tidying away your cables a little they will be ristricting airflow a little like that.

Two questions, do you have a fan on the front? (an intake fan for cold air?) Also, (sorry if this sounds basic) But is the rear fan blowing out of the back of the case? Lastly how dusty is it in there? Get the hoover out and give it a clean out. Ph and before anyone says anything about static, i've use a hoover and air duster on my PC's for as long as i can remember and never had an issue, just dont go in like a madman, be gentle and dont whack anything. ;)

Ebay it as dead? you may geta buyer, someone thinking they may be able to fix it, may not be worth the hassle tho.....

Unfortunately the fittings on my motherboard would only allow the processor to be placed in the direction that it is in now. Which was part of my inquiry on the first page.

The cables I know are a bit of a mess, but onfurtunately the Corsair PSU cables are so thick and I can't remove the ones im not using, ive tucked them in as much as I can and can't get them any better than that. :(

Im pretty sure there is an intake fan on the front as there is a grate there which is slightly cold when my hand is hovering over it, but with the case door closed its not visible. However when closed it leaves enough of a gap for it to work and the rear fan is blowing out the back yes. It is not very dusty in there, gave it a clean out a few days ago.

It seems there is little more I can do :( Thanks for the advice anyway, appreciate it :)
