Found New Hardware !!

S

sammy

Anytime I start XP, I get the message, New hardware found, followed by the
installation process for a video card. Later with the message that it could
not be installed. I always have to press cancel after starting the pc to
stop this annoying Found new hardware (since there is no new hardware)
wizard.
Fact is video card works perfect and there are no yellow marks in device
manager.
How do I stop this?

Assuming it really is this video card which is the root-cause (and with
the information you provide I'm not sure), tt the risk of breaking what
now works (the video card), maybe you un-install it, shutdown,
physically remove it, re-start (to make it work without the card),
shutdown, physically add it back in, then let XP detect "new hardware"
and install it.

Like I said, this may break what now works ... so think it through.

It is a laptop from HP and everything is installed. Obviously, I wont
tamper with the videocard (?) in a laptop.
This started lately (a few days ago).
I even thought, I had messed something up but, the last actual thing I did
was insert a USB memory stick. That was detected and after copying a few
document files on it I removed it. Now I get constantly new hardware found,
and I would have thought something over the usb stuff but no, rather a
video card.

Excellent point. Didn't realize it a laptop, else wouldn't have
suggested this. You may be on to something to think it related to the
USB memory stick ... might want to check the manufacturer's web site.

Have been to the HP site to see faq but nothing similar. I am thinking of
uninstalling the drivers for the videocard and then reinstalling but not
sure what consequenties might follow.

thanks anyway.

Whoa! I think it was the memory stick. When you plugged it in did a
new hardware message show up? In the taskbar there should have been an
icon showing a new device and when you unplugged the device you should
have clicked on the icon and removed it. Plug the memory stick back in
and check. :)

With the new information you provide, I really don't think it is a
problem with the videocard on your laptop.

My hunch it that it's a rougue error message, or at least misleading.

Something changed with the USB went it. It's closer to the root cause.
I don't know much about these critters, so can't directly help you.
But think it through before doing anything.

Did you click on the Safely Add/Remove Hardware icon in the System Tray
before removing the stick?
