Flash Data Will Not Load From Any Web Site

M

Morris Penny

This problem is similar to one recently posted but not quite.

I can run browser imbedded flash files that are loaded directly from the
hard drive. However, cannot load a flash file from a web site. There is a
blank space where the flash data should be. A right click on the spot yields
a box with the message "movie not loaded." At the Macromedia web site
Shockwave flash test successfully checks out; but the flash check fails. I
get the same message as described above when right click where the flash
data should be displayed.

Disabling my firewall and virus checker has no effect.

OS is Windows XP, Home Edition; browser is IE V 6.xx with SP 1 and other
fixes up to date. SP 2 is not installed.

In browser all security options are set to either enable or prompt;
permissions are set to medium, and privacy is set to medium.

Have no problem running ActiveX controls and loading flash data on a
companion platform running Windows 2000 Professional and same
security/privacy settings as used in the XP OS.

Does anyone have an insight to why this problem or what will solve it?

Hi Morris :)

Try the following and see if it helps:

Flash & Shockwave not working

A few of things could contribute to the problem. Have you checked your
firewall to see if the ad-blocker or Flash blocker is set to on or block?
Also, there are several Pop-up blockers that will block Flash unless you
turn it off. I had POP-UP Blocker and it would not open Flash at all, and
it took me a while to figure out what was doing it When I unchecked the
Kill Flash it stopped. Some Flash has pop-ups and the blockers will see
them as ads or and kill it any way.

Also, if you have SpywareBlaster installed, be sure you have Kill Flash
unchecked - Open SpywareBlaster - Tools - Click on Flash Killer then uncheck
"Switch off Flash Player" or in v3.1 Disable and block Macromedia Flash (4X
5X & 6X) in Internet Explorer.

or..........................

Disable Flash Player

See: Disable Flash: http://faq.ozoneasylum.com/446/

or..............

Remove Flash, including all registry entries for it. Reboot then go to
Macromedia's site. Since it is Flash based you should get the dialog to
install Flash. Use the removal information at their site here:

or.........

Enable Flash in SP2

Internet Options> Advanced> Security> Check "Allow active content to run in
files on My Computer"

You will, of course, be giving up some of the security provided by SP2.

You can also make My Computer visible in Internet Options> Security to allow
additional tweaking.

Have performed the following in order outlined below and at each step
checked to see if flash problem had been cured:
1. disabled virus scan (left disabled for remainder of testing)
2. disabled third party S/W firewall (left disabled for remainder of
testing)
3. disabled SpywareBlaster (left disabled for remainder of testing)
4. uninstalled Macromedia Flash (including registry entries); manually
verified files were uninstalled, examined IE Tools/Internet
options/general/settings/view objects to verify IE thought that flash was
uninstalled
5. went to the following site to test for flash:
www.macromedia.com/shockwave/welcome
6. Found that shockwave flash tested ok; but flash failed the test. A right
click on the space where the flash data should be give to 2 cell box. The
top cell has the message "Movie not loaded." The bottom cell has the entry
About Macromedia ....
7. Verified in IE that the latest version of Macromedia Flash was present;
manually verified; also verified that registry had been set.
8. Downloaded example flash files from the Macromedia site to my hard drive.
The imbedded browser files work fine in IE as long as file retrieval is from
the hard drive.
9. Still Cannot load a flash related file from any web site and specifically
where the flash command is embedded in script. Apparently the download
command is not executed and therefore the succeeding script is not executed.
Consequently, you get a blank space where the image or series of images
should be.

Still stuck.

Hi Morris :)

I'm not sure what other I can suggest, except for the following:

Do you have the JavaScript plug-in installed?
http://java.sun.com/webapps/download/AutoDL?BundleId=9567

or...........

You might also try installing the Windows Script 5.6 for Windows 2000 and XP
if you have not already done so. The install includes a new jscript.dl
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...43-7E4B-4622-86EB-95A22B832CAA&displaylang=en

If the above does not owrk, try installing the Sun Java:

You can get the Sun Java J2SE RunTimes or SDK here:
http://java.sun.com/downloads/index.html (all versions - select using the
dropdown)

or here: http://www.java.com/en/download/windows_automatic.jsp

Sun also offers an automatic download and install of the 1.4 Java plug-in
here: http://java.sun.com/getjava/download.html

Sun version
http://java.sun.com/getjava/installer.html

If the above steps do not resolve the problem for you, then hopefully,
someone else here will be able to provide a solution for you. -)

Hope this helps

Apparently the download command is not executed

How certain are you of that assumption and what tests have you done
to prove it?

Essentially then it looks as if you have Flash support for .swf file
association but not for that MIME type.

What did you check in the registry when you "verified that registry
had been set"? BTW I'm not certain if lack of MIME type support
would necessarily imply that a file wouldn't be downloaded. After all,
the MIME information comes in the response headers to the request;
so that almost implies that the download would be aborted after the
headers were inspected.

Depending on the URL which are failing to load another possibility
is that you are blocking them via HOSTS or in TCP/IP filters.
An easy contradiction of that assumption would be to check if the .swf
files are actually being downloaded into the TIF (assuming they are
cacheable) but are just not being rendered. Then it also might be
useful to compare how the page renders when offline. E.g set
File, Work Offline (Alt-F,W) and try to clone the problem page (Ctrl-N)
If you get prompts to Connect ignore them and select Stay Offline
until the window opens.

This is not the right newsgroup for diagnosing networking problems
but here is an interactive FAQ which can get you started on that tack:

http://www.michna.com/kb/wxnet.htm

E.g. check the box "Internet Explorer cannot display some web sites..."

Good luck

I am experiencing a very similar problem. In IE I get a blank space
where the movie should appear. Right clicking, I get "Movie not
loaded...".

However, it works fine in Mozilla Firefox 1.0 PR.

Worth noting is the fact that I created the swf file with CoffeeCup
Firestarter 6.5.

See http://www.pdqdb.com/bnsf/header.html

A problem seems to be that a GET request is being issued for
EOL which gets an HTTP 404 error response.

Try replacing

<PARAM NAME=movie VALUE="EOL">

with

<PARAM NAME=movie VALUE="EOL.swf">

Good luck
