Files that don't defrag.

Joe

I ran Defrag and there are a few files that did not
defragment.
\WINNT\security\logs\scepol.log
\WINNT\system32\config\software.LOG
\WINNT\system32\config\default.LOG
\Documents and settings\Administrator\ntuser.dat.LOG
\WINNT\ShellconCache

They are not large files but I was wondering why they did
not defragment and is there a problem with these files.

Thanks
Joe

Not all files will defrag because they are in use by the
file system.

Don't worry about it

They are always in use by the O/S.

As Jerold points out, these are system files - always in use and hence
untouchable while W2k is running. A defragger that has a "boot time
defrag" option (this runs before such files begin executing, early in
the boot process) can defrag such files if necessary.

A good defragger (like PerfectDisk) will, upon completing an ordinary
defrag run, report such files as "excluded" and also tell you whether
they have excess fragments or not.

I use O&O Defrag V4 at home and work. It will allow you to
defrag all your runtime files at boot, before the
Operating System is fully loaded.

O&O also defrags pagefiles and MFT's at boot.

Actually...

Microsoft's defrag APIs fully support defragmenting these files online (even
though they are in use). Whether a defragmenter takes advantage of this
ability is dependant on which defragmenter you are using.
