Files that won't defragment

E

Evi

I ran scandisk followed by defrag. The report says that the following files
did not defragment:

\WINNT\system32\config\software.LOG
\WINNT\system32\config\default.LOG
\WINNT\system32\config\SECURITY.LOG
\Documents and Settings\Evi\ntuser.dat.LOG
\WINNT\Internet Logs\tvDebug.log
\WINNT\ShellIconCache

Should I do anything about this? Nothing seems to be going wrong at the
moment.

There's a utility at http://www.sysinternals.com that will
defragment these files. If the files are heavily fragmented
then you might want to give it a try; otherwise don't worry
about it.

Thanks Rick. I love free utilities! How fragmented in Heavily Fragmented?

Disk Defragmenter gives a report after it runs. If any of the
files are separated into more than 2 or 3 chunks then go
ahead and run Sysinternals' utility.

Great! ntuserdat.log was in 15 fragments. I like the sound of that other
gadget there, Contig, which lets you defrag just one file.

Sysinternals utilities are wonderful.. lots of things MS should
have included, but didn't.

Just had a go with PageDefrag. Works great but didn't manage to zap one
file.

However I downloaded the other program Contig and that rocks too. You can
copy it into a folder (it doesn't install), put a copy of your command
prompt into the folder, open the command prompt and type

contig -s *

and it defrags every file in the folder at lightening speed and reports
afterwards how clever it has been.
Great link, Rick. Thanks lots
