Defrag problem

Rick C.

After running DEFRAG, I'm left with four "Files that did not
defragment":

C:\WINNT\ShellIconCache
C:\Documents and Settings\FSMG\Local Settings\Temp\PNX14A.TMP
C:\Documents and Settings\FSMG\Local Settings\Temp\PNX14B.TMP
C:\Documents and Settings\FSMG\Local Settings\Temp\PNX14C.TMP

Why would files be unable to defragment?

Can I simply delete at least the last three? There are some 250 files
in that Temp directory. Thanks.

There is no need to worry 4 files is not signifigant.

Yes

What probably happened is a program had these files open and your system
crashed (restarted?). Because the files were not gracefully closed, they
still hang around in the directory structure. The bottom line is that any
thing with a name like .tmp, TMP, TEMP etc is temporary, not meant to
persist. Delete them. --Bill

The combined size of the three .TMP files I mentioned below is half a
gigabyte!

THat is a good part of the reason they wouldn't defrag! Too big, not worth
the effort to move into 1 block, so it goes for 2 or 3.
So I guess size-wise I would like to have them out of the way. Any idea
what these particular files are?

They are not part of windows. As mentioned before, it's possible they are
leftover from a software install.
Hmmmm, by any chance do you have a CD burner? THese could be scratch space
for a copied disk. (wild idea)

If you're paransoid about deleteing them, send'em to the recycle bin (set
the bin up so it has the space) if nothing bad happens, then purge the bin.
Most Likely you'll be FINE deleteing 'em.
There are about 250 files in that C:\Documents and Settings\FSMG\Local
Settings\Temp directory. Can I delete them all? Wonder why they don't
delete themselves upon Windows exit? Thanks much for any help.

HMM, delete them all only if you aren't running any programs (this is
healthy paranoia). You should be able to delete files there last modified
more than 2 days ago (paranoia again).

You can delete any of those fiels that are not currently in use. I
routinely (automatically, at logon) delete all files from my temp folder
that have not been accessed in tha last day. That keeps things cleaned up
but avoids interfering with any install that may be in process when I
reboot.

What is the process for setting up such an auto-delete, and how do you
specify the retention time for the files?

Thanks.

I'm confused because this isn't my C:\TEMP directory or even C:\WINNT
\TEMP. This is C:\Documents and Settings\FSMG\Local Settings\Temp. I
assume this dir is used for different purposes. Are files there still
deletable, as you suggest above?

Yep. That would be the default Temp folder for user FMSG. Anything in
there can be deleted.

Defrag problem: Documents and Settings/AppData

My last defrag hit a snag, and it looks like there's a ton of something that's all mixed up. This is in my Documents and Settings/Application Data folder, which apparently contains 1.58 GB of material. There are 5,524 files in 956 folders, and there are 6,000 some bits of this folder that won't defrag.

Wow -- what happened? This is my C drive, which has been getting pretty full (35% space left), and I also have an external hard drive with 78% space avail.

Any help appreciated, I notice that this thread is Very Old!
