Files and Settings transfer wizard

Hello All,

On a regular basis, I use the File & Settings transfer wizard to back up my
settings to a "slave back up drive" in my desktop computer.

Well, my primary drive crashed last week, and now I've replaced it with a
new one, and reloaded XP, along with all my old programs, and all my saved
files that I regularly back up to my slave drive. So now I want to also go
to my slave drive and migrate my old settings that I've saved, onto the new
drive, just like everything else I had backed up and successfully migrated
onto the new hard drive.

So I go to the folder where the settings are stored on the slave drive to
make sure they are there, I can see two files, one named IMG00001.DAT (it's
1.3GB in size), and also a file named "status" it's only 1KB in size.

Now, I open the File and Settings transfer wizard, follow the commands,
then, I get to a question where the wizard asks me something like "where do I
want to retrieve my settings from", so I point the wizard to the folder where
I've saved them at on my slave drive.......

Then, after I hit next, I constantly get an error box that tells me the
following:

"The location that you specified does not contain stored information. Please
type a valid folder path into the edit box.....If you entered a path to a
folder on a removable disk, the disk must be in the drive."

And I can't get past that error message.....I've tried copying the settings
I've saved from my slave drive, onto my new primary drive, and then tried
pointing the wizard to that location thinking that maybe the saved settings
had to be on the primary drive for the wizard to retrieve them, but that
didn't work either.

So I'm stuck, How do I get my old settings migrated onto my new hard drive?

Any help is appreciated, and thanks much in advance.

Be sure that you're using the same version of FAST. If you made your backups
using the SP2 version, you'll need the same version to restore the data.

Hi David,

I'm using the same version of XP now on my new drive that had been using
when I made my original back up of settings with the File and Transfer
wizard.

I'm not sure what FAST is, or how I would now if I'm using one version vs
another, but the XP version is the same, SP2 that is.

Are there any other tweaks you know of that would get me to be able to
retrieve my saved settings?

Thanks for the support.

You most likely have a corrupted file, but there may be hope. There is a tool
available that may be able to extract data from a corrupted file. This tool is
called the Fastconv Extraction Tool.

See paragraphs 6 & 7 in the section titled, "Reminders & Troubleshooting", in
this article for details of how to get this tool:

Supplemental:

Be sure to read Ramesh's website for more detailed info regarding the causes of
that error message and it also contains complete instructions on using the
FASTconv tool. There's a link to his website on the page that I previously
cited, but just in case, here's a direct link:

Hope this helps.
