Files and Settings Transfer Wizard

I recently backed up a hard drive using the Microsoft Windows XP Professional
Files and Settings Transfer Wizard. The old hard drive was then removed and
wiped clean. A new hard drive was installed. Microsoft Windows XP
Professional was installed.

When I ran the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard, I got the following error
message: "Your migration store was created with a previous version of Files
and Settings Transfer Wizard. Please collect your setting using the current
version of the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard. It is available on the
Windows XP CD under Perform Additional Tasks. You can also create a wizard
disk by running the wizard on your Windows XP computer."

The original hard drive isn't an option any longer. Is there anyway I can
recover my files from the .DAT file?

If you are using the 64 bit version of Windows XP you are out of luck. If
you are using the 32 bit version then uninstall Microsoft Update 896344.
This is a newer version that must be used when moving from 32 bit to 64 bit
XP. Unfortunately it is not compatible with files saved via older versions.

Okay, then here is a stupid question: How can I tell which version of
Microsoft Windows XP I am running (32-bit versus 64-bit)?

Also, why didn't Microsoft warn me when I backed up the Files and Settings?
This would have been great information to have had before the old hard drive
had gotten wiped! <laughs>

See http://windowsxp.mvps.org/fast.htm

There is a link at the bottom of the article to get the FASTCONV
utility.

Good luck

Almost certainly you have the 32-bit edition. Almost anybody who has to ask
the question is running the 32-bit version. The 64-bit version requires
special hardware.

But if you want to check to be sure, enter WINVER at the Start | Run line.

As Ken said if you have to ask it is unlikely you have the 64 bit version.
Use Explorer to navigate to the Windows folder. Look for a folder called
$NtUninstallKB896344$. You may have to enable explorer to see hidden and
system files. Under that folder you will find a folder called spuninst. In
that folder run the program called spuninst.exe. It will uninstall the
update. If you don't have this folder then something else is causing the
problem.

I seem to be doing something wrong. Everytime I try to run the FASTCONV
program, I am told that the SOURCE STORE IS INVALID.
