Files and settings transfer wizard not working.

This is a critical problem for me. I did a clean install of XP yesterday.
Today I installed SP 2 and all seemed to be well. Before doing
the clean install of XP, I backed up all my files and settings to and
external drive, using the files and transfer wizard (I had SP 2 on when I
did this). Today, when I went to recover my files and settings with the
transfer wizard it said the folder was empty. But the designated folder was
not empty. There were 19.3 Gigabytes in it--the transfer I made before I
re-installed XP. I badly need to recover my files and settings from my
external drive and put them back on my main drive. What might cause this
problem? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for responding Webbie. I did all of the windows updates, but the
wizard still would not see the data in the file. Still working on the
problem. Anyone else have this problem?

Congratulations! I was not so lucky. I resolved my other issues but my
files from the transport wizard were corrupted and could not be deciphered.
I had MS certified techs on it and they gave up. I thank God I had a second
back-up system for the critical files. It's a lesson. Tell others you can't
completely rely on the XP files and settings transfer system.

I have the same initial problem as Don. I want to re-install Windows so I
backed up files and settings on a spare internal drive. FAST created a
directory and put 20gb of .DAT files in it. Before wiping my main drive I
wanted to be sure I could restore the files, good thing. On restoring, FAST
reports there are no file in the directory it just created and filled. My
system has all updates.

Any idea what's up?

That is exactly what happened in my case Rick. "No files in directory,
etc.". This is a serious defect in the system. In my case several MS
trained experts were unable to retrieve the files and settings. It took me
several days to fix things. Thank G. I had a secondary backup of my major
files.

Regards, Don.

I seem to be having the same problem transferring files and settings to a new
machine. The circumstances are a bit different because I am not using a DAT
or any USB external drives but am using my network to put the FAST files on
the new machine in a shared partition on a SATA 160 gig drive (and
subsequently in several other places - it doesnt seem to matter where, it
just refuses to admit that there is data there). As far as I know I have all
the updates installed on both machines and they are both XP prof. Most of the
transfer I have done manually, but there are a couple of items that are
unforgiving when "manhandled" and I really need (want) to save them. So I am
wondering if there has been any further progress on this thread? Perhaps
there are still bugs with these Hyperthreading P4's - sometimes this thing
moves so fast it is a bit unnerving.

Any help would be appreciated

There has been no response on this thread for four months. I assume this is
just another buggy Microsoft product. They depend on the user community to
come up with fixes and work arounds to their problems since even Microsoft
doesn't have enough money to make their products actually work as advertised.

Sorry for the negativity but I guess I've gotten pretty sour on PC stuff in
general and Microsoft stuff in particular that simply does not deliver what
we paid them for.

I would still be interested in a solution if anyone finds one.
