~ file shows up on desktop

Why does a file labeled "~" show up on my desktop? If I
delete it, it just shows back up with a day or so. It's
176 kb and doesn't seem to do anything. It's marked as an
archive file. It's annoying.

Any ideas?

It's a backup of your address book. Due to a bug in an update from MS this
will happen every time the backup is created by MS Outlook Express.

FYI - "All" files prefixed with a Tilde (~) are temporary
working files and can be safely deleted. The same
goes for any files subscripted .Tmp

This is a known bug that was in the April 2003 Cumulative Patch.
Microsoft is aware of it and is suppossed to be working on a fix.

It is a backup of your address book and you can safely delete it.
