File Renaming

D

Don Bushee

I am using Sony DSC-V1 with XP Professional.

I had camera working just fine using camera setting
of "Normal" for camera's USB port.

Some software I was using to transfer photos from camera
to computer would start automatically.
This software would offer me the option of renaming the
group of photos as I copied or moved them from camera to
hard drive.

I do not know if this was a feature of MS XP (Pro)
Scanners and Cameras Wizard, or if this was software from
Sony.

At some point it stopped working. When I would cable up
the camera and turn it on, it would be recognized as a
Sony Memory Stick only, and a Windows Explorer window
would open showing me the folders on the memory stick
inside the camera.

By changing the camera USB port setting from "Normal" to
PTP the camera was recognized by XP again and now would
initiate the XP's Scanners and Cameras Wizard.

(Quote from Sony's manual "PTP mode is compatible only
with Windows XP. When connected to a computer, only the
data in the folder selected by the camera is copied to
the computer.")

How or where the renaming feature has gone, I do not
know.

I tried switching back to setting of "Normal" for
camera's USB port, but then wizard does not start at all.

I tried deleting all of the Sony and USB references in
device manager, but this did not help either.

I was able to install a Sony app called Image Transfer,
but it is pretty bad, and does not offer my lost renaming
function.

I found a third party utility
(http://www.picturesort.com/) for renaming (it is
actually better, since it allows both prefix and suffix
to new file names), but it was much more convenient to do
copy and rename automatically and all in one step.

Thanks, DRB
