Downloading Sony CD Mavica pics to XP

I have a Sony MVC-CD200. I don't have RealPlayer installed. I tried the
AutoFix.exe solution, but it fails to solve my problem. My camera is set to
PTP. Everything worked great at one time, but now I am having this problem:
I plug the camera into a USB port. I hear the dong-ding. A window comes up
after a few seconds with a title "Sony Digital Still Camera". The body of
the window states, "Camera connected", "Select the program to launch for this
action:". However, the listbox of programs is blank, and the camera turns
off immediately after the window appears. Soon afterward I hear the
ding-dong sound. I've tried to access the camera's CD ROM with Windows
Explorer. The camera is listed, but it does not have a drive letter, and
again, as soon as the "Sony Digital Still Camera" window appears, the camera
turns off, so I can't access its CD ROM. Thank you in advance for any help
someone can give me.

It looks like the USB connection is fine and XP does recognize the camera,
but for some reason it cannot assign a drive letter to it. By any chance, is
your computer on a network? If so, will it let XP assign a drive letter to
an attached device?

Your camera is probably connected. If you look in Windows Explorer or My
Computer, you should see a new drive in the list. Every USB device I attach
to my PC uses G: drive as the default. If you already have a device using G:
drive and the camera needs to access it, it may not work but I'll bet your
photos are in there.

Have you tried removing the CD from
the camera and place it in the tray of
your CD drive? There should be a
depression in the center of your CD
tray that will fit the small disk.

Try these steps:

1) Right click your desktop, choose...
New / Folder. This will create a New
Folder on your desktop...this is where
the image files will be copied.

2) Insert the CD in your CD drive. A
dialog box may appear on your screen
that says: What do you want windows
to do? You will have several choices...
Choose...
"Open Folder To View Files" / "OK".

2B) If the dialog box does not appear...
go to the *My Computer* icon on your
desktop and left click it. In the window
that opens you will see all of your drives.
Right click the icon for your CD drive...
(probably (D:)...from the menu...choose
...."Open"...

3) Now you should see a window with
some folders in it. This is the contents of
the CD. Left click the various folders until
you find the image files. When you see
the images pop up...Go to the toolbar at
the top of the window and left click...
....Edit / Select All...
.....once more....
....Edit / Copy...
Now you can close the window.

4) Now...open your New Folder with a
left click and go to...Edit / Paste...this
will copy the selected image files into
your New Folder.

My computer is not on a network. I am not sure about how to go about
assigning a drive letter to the camera. I think I would have to take it out
of PTP mode because XP is turning the camera off somehow. Also, the CD in
the camera is not finalized, so it looks like special software is necessary
because XP does not recognize the CD when I place it in my CD ROM drive.

While the camera is on (maybe a minute) before XP turns it off, it appears as
a child node of "My Computer", but it is not assigned a drive letter. When I
click on the camera icon, it looks like XP is trying to access it, but before
anything appears in Windows Explorer, the camera is turned off by XP and the
PTP connection. The camera appears in Windows Explorer similar to my
Logitech webcam, which appears below "My Computer" without a drive letter. I
did have two legacy hard drives connected to my PC, one of which, was
assigned G:. I removed that drive so G: would be available, but to no avail
as the same situation remains.

I tried this solution. When I place the CD in the CD ROM my cursor icon
changes to an arrow with a little CD next to it. However, in Windows
Explorer when I click on my D: drive (CD ROM), nothing appears to the right
as if no disk was in the drive. I think this my have something to do with
the CD not being finalized. I needed special software from Sony, which I
used with Windows 2000 to view the camera's unfinalized disk. Sony now says
just use PTP with XP. XP was working great with PTP. I don't know what I
did or what happened to create this problem with the PTP method of access.
