Importing Pictures from Canon g9

G

guy2001

I cannot import pictures directly to my pc from my canon g9 camera, which
uses a sd memory card. The camera is not recognised by windows XP. I have
tried updating the driver, using install hardware wizard, etc with no joy.
it appears that the ptp driver in windows xp for this camera is either
missing or corrupted (error 39 is listed), the camera does not appear in the
list of hardware in the install hardware wizard. I have tried installing a
different camera driver from the list in the wizard, but none of them will
actually load and appear in the cameras and scanners folder, and have a
little exclamation point icon next to them.

i am using windows XP with sp2 and all the necessary windows updates from
the update site. Having read some other threads here, I will be buying a
card reader to see if that works, but i'm half expecting that the pc will not
recognise or read that either. I also have a small sony camera which the pc
has no trouble recognising.

i think i need to re-install the missing or corrupted plug-and-play drivers
for XP but so far i haven't been able to identify where they can be found on
microsoft's huge site.

Sorry for such a long winded question -- any suggestions would be appreciated.

Congrats on the G9...I would like to have one
myself. How do you like the 1024x768 movie mode?

Instead of fighting all these issues why not purchase
a USB Memory Card Reader and download your
image files from it. The reader will be identified
as a Removable Disk and no aditional software
will be required.

As a bonus you won't have to connect your camera
when downloading and your batteries will not be
drained. Also it's possible to corrupt images by
downloading when batteries are low so there's
another roadblock that is omitted.

Cheers.

Think it has something to do with Christmas!! I'm having the same problem
with a camera my wife has just bought, a Fujifilm. The computer accepts our
Pentax but not this new one. I have tried everything and everywhere for
remedies. I couldn't find any updates/software to fix it on any websites.
Have you tried the manufacturers website??

Hope you get a solution, seems like the best idea is the card reader.

Good luck!

A card reader is the answer.

Absolutely.

And it might be worth exercising some caution when installing the
typically "invasive" camera manufacturer's software. It is typically
not nearly as lean or as usable as free or very low-priced alternatives,
and it (and its drivers) often are of poor quality and compromise both
machine reliability and compatibility.

Remember, camera manufacturers are *not* computer software people,
and they don't properly value good software, in general.

If you have multiple cameras, this makes matters even worse, with
the liklihood of incompatibilities rising rapidly.

Agreed 110%....I never install any of
that type software on my system.

Happy New Year!

I tried the Canon website, but there's no driver for this generation of
camera as it's meant to "plug and play" in Windows XP. The good news is that
I bought a card reader (it was on sale!) and had it working in about 60 secs.
So maybe that's the way you should go, too.

Best Wishes!

Thanks for your help John.

After trawling through a lot of other posts, I did go out and buy a card
reader on new years eve, and it worked like a charm. There were some
possible advantages with canon's own software in terms of automatic numbering
of images on transfer, but I guess I'll live without that. Canon provides no
driver for this camera as it's meant to "plug and play" in XP. I still think
I have a plug&play driver issue in my installed XP, though, as I also have a
scanner that's stopped being recognised by the pc recently. Oddly enough,
it's also a Canon.

The G9 is great. I haven't actually tried the movie mode yet -- too busy
learning the ropes and taking stills!

Regards,

Guy

You're welcome.

Thanks for the update...

Maybe reinstalling the scanner driver
would help. And it may be worth a try
to use a different USB port.

There's a sample 1024x768 video from
a G9 at the following link...it's pretty good.
