File corruption

C

Chris Watts

I have been preparing a presentation using PPT97 and PPT2000 with no
problems moving the files between them. To ensure compatability with later
versions I have been running the files through Powerpoint Viewer 2003. No
problems until recently

After a recent editing session I saved the file and run it with the 2003
Viewer - and it declared that the file was corrupted!
The file will run in PPT97 and in the 97 Viewer just fine.

I have tried, in PPT97, resaving the file - same result. Also tried to save
a "Powerpoint Presentation 95 or 97" but it declares that it cannot carry
out the necessary conversion.

Needless to say, the mods that I have made are sufficiently complex that I
cannot unravel them to an earlier version.

Any suggestions as to what is happening and how to overcome it?

TIA
Chris

Extend foot. Pull trigger. <g>

At least that's what I'd suggest you're risking when you bounce repeatedly
between different PPT versions and edit a file in each.

I wouldn't do that if I were you.

As to the problem with 2003 Viewer, you might check for a newer version.
There've been several similar-sounding problems between earlier PPT versions
and PPT2003; these have been corrected by various service packs. Perhaps the
same fixes have been rolled into later Viewer 2003 versions. Worth checking!

If no joy there, try this (in PPT 2000, not 97):

HTML "Round-tripping" to repair corruption

Thanks for that Steve.
Not a lot of choice with the bouncing. I have 97 at home and 2000 at work.
Experienced no problems over a period of several years - lucky!!!

Will look for later version of viewer, though think I have the latest.
Will certainly try the round-trip via HTML in 2000.

Let us know how it works out, would you Chris?
Thanks!

Will do, Steve.
Cannot try it until next at work on Saturday. I am "retired" and only work
Saturdays <vbg>

Steve:
It worked perfectly.

I loaded the "corrupted" file into PPT2000 - no problem there.
Save as web page
Close file
Open the htm file again in PPT2000
Save as Presentation.

This file will now open in PPT97, PPT200, Viewer97 and Viewer2003.

During the process I had some flakey experiences with Viewer 2003. It
renders some animations differently from PPT97 and PPT2000. For instance
"Hide on next mouse click" does exactly that in PPT97 and PPT2000 but viewer
hides the object on next event whether it is a mouseclick or an automatic
timed event. I also found that it renders some lines in boxes much
thicker - 2mm in place of 2pt. So I will be very careful about using
Viewer2003.

Thanks
for your assistance
Chris

Hey, that's good news. Roundtripping is really quite remarkable. Improbable,
but remarkable. <g>
