For doing the icon thing, I am certain nothing exists superior to
DLTypes.

It \will\ work under Windows XP, right? It says: "Platform:
W2K/NT4/W95/W98/ME." I know W2K programs generally work under XP, but
since we're talking about messing around in the very heart of the system,
I need to be sure. Thanks, to all.

Question re: the above ftp site....
Any or all of this freeware/shareware? I just downloaded one and it was
a 30 day trial.
Curious,
POKO

Combination of both and unfortunately you don't know till you dl and
check out the readme.txt. I'm pretty sure I mentioned it in the
original post about one of the others I dl being shareware. Must have
gotten snipped.

Cheers! :blush:D

The registry architecture of W2K and XP is the same; and that which goes
to make up HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT for them is the same. I don't know if there
is any other aspect of XP to consider here.

I'll try changing the subject header to page Bjorn S., to solicit his
opinion whether this prog should get a green-light for XP.

Bjorn,

I hope you see this post. The program in question is DLTypes. It uses
the entry point HKCR to do its changes (means I don't have to think about
those two real branches for \classes of NT5). The question: Taking the
compatibility statement re 2K as true, is there any reason not to next
assume like compatibility for XP?

A bit off topic but in my file associations (XP Home) I seem to have
entries like:

.avi
.avi"
.inc
.inc"
.lib
.lib"
.mpe"
.mpg

is the " on these file extensions correct? Or has something messed it
up? I can't seem to get zoom player to start when I double click a
.avi etc. in explorer. .avi" is set to acrobat which doesn't seem
right at all :-(.

This has been bugging me. The thing is that I had the same symptom. It was
about two years ago. I didn't know the cause. Since you posted, I've been
wracking my imagination on what brings about that symptom, but did not get
on to any solid theories. (Further, a search is very hard. Local file finder
utils, and then worse is web search, since how do you have that right quote
character as part of the find string..)

Anyway, when I found the entries on my system that are like those you have,
the .xxx", I deleted the screwy ones. Or renamed to the proper form; I don't
recall the details. The essence of what you need to be sure about is to make
sure that the value for an extension key matches up to a filetype key name.
So before you delete .avi", make sure that the correctly named key, .avi, has
the same value entries. That its default value entry points to a filetype. In
this example, the filetype might be named "movfile" or "avifile," but can be
named anything. The filetype key will then have the needed action references
pointing to local programs that are associated with it.

My description of what to look for, it comes out sounding fogged up, I know.
It would be better if I knew what interface you were using to view the goofed
keys. A file associations editor? A windows dialog? A registry editor?

Nice try but it looks like google is only return those posts where
people have said something like:

..avi" (that is a quote-mark)

so very few hits (not my original post for one :), just your post).
More to the point none seem relevant.
