Fiels and settings transfer problem connecting the two computers

I'm trying to transfer some files from my windows 98 se
hard drive to my windows xp hard drive. I am attempting to
transfer files via a direct cable connection. I am using a
brand new null modem cable.
When I get to the point in the process where it is setting
up the serial connection, I click "Autodetect", and the
box pops up that says "Please wait while the wizard is
connecting to the other computer" and that's as far as it
gets. I have let this run for as long as two hours without
getting any further. Is this normal? How long should it
take?
