explorer window failurer

when I click on the "my computer" icon then try to open a folder I receive
and error message stating the explorer window has encountered a problem and
must shut down. Then it request error reports, dr.watson etc. Sometimes I
lose the desktop completely and a new desktop appears that asks if I want to
restore my desk top. When I select ok many of my tray icons are missing,
check task manger show that some of my programs are nolonger running. I
always update windows xp home edition and this problem seem to first show up
after the update I did on about the 18th. Going back to a restore point a
month back seems to cure this problem however I cannot access information
stored in folders after that point. When the explore problem is present I
cannot back up information to my external drive.
I have sent many error reports to microsoft but they are unwilling to help
since this version of widows came pre loaded on my computer.
I would appreciate any insite that one of you could give me.

Problems in Windows Explorer or the Windows shell after you install security
update MS06-015
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/918165

Revised - Vulnerability in Windows Explorer Could Allow Remote Code Execution
(908531)
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/MS06-015.mspx
Note according to the Bulletin, MS will release an revised version of KB908531
(MS06-015) on April 25th - See FAQ section

For those who are experiencing problems now after installation of the update and
who have Hewlett Packard's Share to Web Software, there are two registry patches
to choose from (run either one or the other) not both (NB both patches do the
same thing):

Ottmar Freudenberger's is available at:-
http://patch-info.de/WinXP/Downloads/KB908531_Share-To-Web.zip
(Note this is a Zip file and will need to be extracted. It contains a REG file
which needs to be imported into the registry)

and Kelly's patch is available at:
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm
Line #383 - this is a vbs file and instructions on how to use such files are at
the top of the page.

If you hare not using "Share to Web Software" then consider the following:

Are you using a Nvidia video card? Check for updated drivers.
http://www.nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.asp

Do you have Kerio Personal Firewall, if so make sure you read the article
carefully: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/918165

For additional information regarding this issue, have a look at the posting on
Aumha.net by Maurice N, MVP Windows - Shell / User
"Problems in Windows Explorer/ Windows shell due to 908531"
http://aumha.net/viewtopic.php?t=19125

If you uninstall the update make sure you read the section titled "Workaround
for Windows shell vulnerability" under Vulnerability Details:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/Bulletin/MS06-015.mspx

Also you'll need to check Automatic Updates and make sure that the update isn't
automatically downloaded - Configure Automatic Updating in Windows XP - 306525
