Windows Explorer Error

D

DrMarsha

Everytime I right click on any hard drive in My Computer, I get a Windows
Explorer error.....at first, I got a Data Execution Prevention error so I
configured the DEP to scan all Windows Files except for Windows Explorer.
Now, I get the Windows Explorer error every time...I have to force quit in
the Task Manager. I chatted with the Microsoft techs for over 8 hours on this
issue and they can't figure it out. It does not happen on any other folders
or applications...the only ones are in the My Computer, Hard Drive,
area...any thoughts?

I'm also working in SP3...forgot to mention that.

Did you use the ShellexView to capture the process causing this error?

How to configure Windows XP to start in a "clean boot" state
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310353/en-us

Please have a look in the Event Viewer and post back the error messages you
will find there in your next post (The Exact Verbatim of the error message).

Can you answer these Qs for me in your next post also:
1- When this error started ( after installing new software/hardware or
updates?)
2-Did you run the System File checker (SFC) to repair corrupt/damaged system
core files?
3- Did you tries system Restore to an earlier date?

Open a Notepad, customize or minimize to the taskbar as you will need it
later for this step to copy the error message on it.
Open a run command and type in:
eventvwr.msc click [OK] you will get the Event viewer control Panel.
click on each of these:
Application
System
Security
Look in the right Pane/window for error message with red (X) or Yellow
exclamation mark /!\ , double click each one to get more info about the
causer.
On the Event error properties message you will see:
Up Arrow
Down arrow
Two pages
Click on the two pages to copy the error message then bring up the Notepad
you opened earlier and right click on the first line and select Paste from
the list, this will paste the error message on a Notepad.
Please don't duplicate the error message one of each kind will be sufficient.
HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308427/en-us

Please we need just the error messages with Red (X) and don't repeat the
error, just one of each kind and post them back in your next post.

Hope you still looking for a solution if you didn't already solved it!
1- Click Start >> Control Panel >>Select System
2- On System Properties Click the Advanced tab.
In the Performance region select Settings

4- Select Turn on DEP for all programs and services except for those I select
then Click Add.
5- The open dialog box will open. Browse and select your application.
6- Click Open
7- Click [Apply] Then Click [Ok]
Reboot your machine and try to open any program/application.

How to Turn DEP OFF:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/875352

Edit the Boot.ini to include<noexecute=AlwaysOff>:

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home
Edition" /noexecute=AlwaysOff /fastdetect

Please repalce with "Windows XP Professional" if you have XP pro in the
above Boot.ini file.
