Explorer.Exe Generating Errors

G

Gordo_la

Running Windows 2000. Everytime I enter Search to run a
search of my files and folders on C and D drives, as soon
as the entry page opens - before I can type anything - a
program error appears and states that Explorer.exe has
generated errors and will be closed by Windows. It also
states that an error log is being created. I have run a
regedit program in hopes that that would identify the
problem, but to no avail. Any advice would be greating
appreciated

Hi Gordo,

Thanks for the posting. I did quick research and found the following
solution. Hope this will solve the problem:

When you start Windows Explorer, or when you use the Search feature to
search for files or folders and then start Windows Explorer, you may
receive the following error message:

Explorer.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows.
You will need to restart the program.

An error log is being created.

CAUSE
=======
This behavior can occur if you install Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 and
there is a program or a service installed on your computer that is
incompatible with Internet Explorer 6.

RESOLUTION
=============
To resolve this issue, remove Internet Explorer 6 and restore the earlier
version of Internet Explorer. To do this, follow these steps.

NOTE: You must be logged on as Administrator or as a member of the
Administrators group to remove Internet Explorer 6 on a Windows 2000-based
computer. After you remove Internet Explorer 6, you cannot remove the
earlier version of Internet Explorer that remains on the computer.
Quit all running programs.
Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
In the Currently installed programs list, click Microsoft Internet Explorer
6, and then click Change/Remove.
Click Restore the earlier Windows configuration, and then click OK.
Click Yes when you are prompted to remove Internet Explorer.
Click Restart Windows to restart the computer.
Start Windows Explorer to verify that you no longer receive the error
message described in the "Symptoms" section of this article.
Start Internet Explorer, and then browse to the following Microsoft Web
site to download any security updates that are needed for the version of
Internet Explorer that remains installed on your computer:

Running win2k sp4. I'm having problems related to WE as described in
the post below by another user. However when I attempt to uninstall IE
6 as this fix recommends, it does not appear in the list of programs
under add/remove. When I go to IE in WE, there is a folder marked "IE
uninstall, but clicking on the only executable there (w2kexcp.exe) does
nothing (apparently). There is also a folder named "Uninstall
Information", but it only contains 2 small .dt & 2 small .ini files.
How can I uninstall IE 6, or roll it back to the earlier version, to see
if my WE problems go away?

TIA

Dan

Hi Dan - How to Uninstall Internet Explorer 6
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=293907

If you want to re-install or just do a repair:

For just IE6 repair if you don't have IE6 listed in Add-Remove Programs,
then in Start|Run then enter

"rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE6Maintenance"

without the quotes, exactly as shown, and select the appropriate entry.

If you find that you need to do a re-install of IE6 then you can consider
the following:

1) Insert the Windows installation CD in your CD-ROM drive.
2) Click Start, and click Run.
3) Copy the command prompt below in the Open box, and click OK.

Rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132
c:\windows\inf\ie.inf

4) It will display a "File Needed" screen, click "Browse.." and browse to
<CD-ROM drive>\i386, (<CD-ROOM drive> is the drive letter of the CD-ROM,
For example, D:).

5) Click Open, click Ok, it should begin reinstalling Internet Explorer
