Keep receiving a socket error 10060 when attempting to send email. Charter
says it is an error within the software. How do I correct? I can receive
mail okay. the port is listed correctly as 25. Do I need to disable McAfee?

Hard to say without more details. Do you get an error message when
you try to send? If so, right-click on the error message, copy, then paste it
into a reply here.
We can't do much troubleshooting without that complete error message.

The connection to the server has failed. Subject 'Re: Happy Labor Day!',
Account: 'Mail', Server: 'mail.charter.net', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25,
Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10060, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E

When you got that error message, were you sending from home, or from
a laptop away from home?

Which antivirus are you using? Some of them are not very compatible
with Windows Mail.

laptop. New computer. Connected to Knology internet provider. Accessing
Charter for email. McAfee antivirus. Old computer ran Windows XP and had no
problems, but it was hit by lightning last week.

What you are experiencing is normal. For a fuller explanation see
http://www.postcastserver.com/help/Port_25_Blocking.aspx

As a general rule, the owner of the SMTP server must match the
entity providing the Internet connection.

The available workarounds are as follows:

1. Use webmail for sending (via your browser).
2. Ask your home ISP if they have a port other than '25' for SMTP. I don't think
Charter does. Cable companies are very bad about accommodating travelers.
3. Substitute the SMTP server belonging to your away-from-home connection
(Knology). This is a bit tricky, but if you want to go that route, I can provide
more details.
4. If you frequently send from multiple locations, get a free Gmail account,
configure it for POP access, and use it for your sending chores.
Gmail uses port 465 for SMTP, which is not blocked like port 25 is.
