My outgoing mail has been working well for months, and I am now getting the
following error message. I have triple-checked my settings with my isp
provider and they are fine. I am receiving e-mails but cannot send any.

The connection to the server has failed. Subject 'test', Account: 'Diane's
e-mail', Server: 'mail.telus.net', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No,
Socket Error: 10060, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E

According to Telus.net article shown in the link, your server name is wrong.
Follow this link. Pick the one applicable to your mail client.

\I meant to include my new error message as follows:-

The connection to the server has failed. Subject 'e-mail settings from
Telus', Account: 'imap.telus.net', Server: 'smtp.telus.net', Protocol: SMTP,
Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10060, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E

SMTP is for OUT-going mail
POP/IMAP is for IN-coming mail
If you have problem receiving, try ......
Use server name POP.telus.net, instead of imap.telus.net

Excerpt from the Telus.net instructions :----
Note: Make sure you do not check the 'Outgoing server requires
authentication' box.
Did you follow that instruction ?

I have been trying to set up my email (Windows Mail, Vista) and the Outgoing
server, SMTP, in my setup is 465 for that (In Tools/Accounts/Advanced).

But maybe it won't work for you?

Alas, I have tried outgoing mail SMTP 465, 587, 25 and 26. None of these did the trick.

Ah, well, I finally did it the easy way. I downloaded WinLiveMail, and
things got simpler. (In Windows Mail, Accounts/Properties, I found that the
outgoing server or sometimes the incoming server port number would revert to
the default number. And then, in WLM, choosing the "clear text
authentication" for incoming mail solved my probs. Strange. But that
option wasn't available in WinMail.

so I am off to the races.

Clear text authentication is the default, and that's what Windows Mail
uses unless you configure it differently.
However, switching to Windows Live Mail is a good move because it
is the only MS free email client receiving active development and fixes.
