(this error happend on my friends computer) When i started
the install it was going all good. started install then it
got down to 39mins left, and it said

An error has been encountered that prevents Setup from
continuing

Setup failed to install product catalogs. THis is a
fatal error. The setup log files should contain more
information.

Then it said in the log
This signature for Windows XP is invalid. Error code
fffffb40.

I cant format i have to much info on computer.
And if i could get into dos i would be fine except the
fact that it wont boot from any discs it just keeps trying
to resume the setup for the upgrade but it error's with
the same error everytime i let it go.

So what im asking for is a way around this problem.
Or a way to boot up into MS-Dos

Check the fix below.

"Failed To Install Product Catalog" Error Message When You Install Windows
XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;823303&Product=winxp

FYI, never upgrade without a proper backup.
Good Luck,
