Error 1406 Installing .NET Framework

This is becoming quite frustrating....Thanks to anyone who can assist!

I've tried all of the suggestions from
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/306160/en-us and
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/320112/en-us to no avail.

When installing any .NET Framework version I now get the following error:
"Error 1406. Could not write value TypesSupported to key
\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Eventlog\Application\.NET Runtime. Verify
that you have sufficient access to that key, or contact your support
personnel."

I have administrator rights on this machine. .NET Framework 1.1 was
actually installed successfully and working long ago. But, when trying to
install .NET 2.0 recently (needed by a new app) this error began. And now
after following the instructions in the above referenced help articles, no
versions of .NET will install without showing this error message.

I can no longer run several apps on my machine that require .NET and I'm
dead in the water. HELP?!

Thanks,
--Christine

Hi Christine,
Did you turn your Anti-virus Off when you done your installtion or did you
try to download another copy for the .NET it may the first one being
corupted?.
If you done the above and you sure that your download copy is complete, then
you may have damaged User Profile, so by trying to create a new profile you
may be successful in installing .NET 2.0.

Thanks for your reply, Nass.

I don't have any Virus protection software even installed on this machine.
I've created an alternate user account with admin rights as you've suggested
and still have this issue. I have re-downloaded the .NET 1.1 install as well
as tried with an install set that came with a product I need to install.
Both installs show the same error message -- 1406. Any other suggestions?

Thanks,

Hi Christine,
Does your machine clean from infestation from malwares and viruses or it
doesn't connect tot he Internet?.
I will be sure that IIS ( Internet information Service)is working fine and
is functioning, you mentioed that .NET1.1 has been instaled long ago and was
working fine, it could be damaged if not been used from a long time by any
means!.
Run this command and see if it will correct any damaged files:
Open a Run command and type: sfc /scannow click [OK]

= Another to check is this aspnet forums:
http://forums.asp.net/
This link for removal tools and fixes for .NET and there are good fixes there:

HTH.
Please let us know your findings as your feedback could help other having
the same situation as yours and for us to learn.
Thank you.
Best of luck.

nass
